In honor of Black History Month, I’m highlighting the inspiring people and places who work endlessly to preserve and share African-American stories with all of us.

Today is all about the Gullah Geechee culture in Pin Point, Georgia.

This culture began with enslaved West Africans who worked on plantations on Georgia’s Sea Islands. Gullah describes the language and Geechee describes the people. Gullah developed as a sort of lingua franca.

Once emancipated, they formed a community in Pin Point and lived largely in isolation for over a century. I got to meet with one of the founder’s descendants, Gail Smith. While we walked around the Pin Point Heritage Museum, she told me more about how the Geechee were able to self-sustain for decades before inviting visitors in.

In honor of Black History Month, I’m highlighting the incredible people and places who work endlessly to preserve and share African-American stories with all of us.

Threat Filling Station in Luther, Oklahoma was the first Black-owned service station on Route 66.

Founded by Allen Threatt Sr in 1915, it was THE spot for weary roadtrippers, whether they needed gas, groceries, or somewhere to rest overnight. They even had dances on the weekend!

I was lucky to talk to Ed and Reverend Allen Threatt III, who are working hard to preserve the building and their family’s legacy of being a safe haven for black motorists during the Jim Crow era and sundown towns.

Great News! Restoration is finished and Threatt Filling Station will be open to visitors in May 2026!

Chicagoans!!!! You are my kind of people! The amount of great recommends truly show how much you love your city.

I was staying out in Rosemont because of a speaking gig. So I knew I had to concentrate my visit in a central area. It was also a Monday. Which is when some businesses were closed.

I knew I had to have dinner in Pilsen so that also kept me in one area. So I wasn’t able for time (and coldness) to head out to more of your great neighborhoods.

What I accomplished in one day is truly remarkable and that’s why Chicago is one of the best visitor friendly cities in the world.

In honor of Black History Month, I’m highlighting the amazing people and places who work endlessly to preserve and share African-American stories with all of us. Today I’m talking about the Route History Museum in Springfield, IL!

Whenever traveling Route 66, it’s always important to remember that though this highway represented freedom of movement for many, it wasn’t that way for everyone.

Black Americans who traveled along Mother Road often had to contend with both Jim Crow laws and hostile racism. Nevertheless, they persisted and through community, word of mouth, and guides like the Green Book, they were able to navigate safely.

The Route History Museum was created to share this history. While visiting, I got to chat with co-CEO and co-owner, Dr. Stacy Grundy about her work and the importance of remembering these stories.

I don’t think my rebooked flight on Delta is going to make it out EVEN ON Monday and All later flights are sold out.

Plan B is to use miles to book flight on United for after my plan A Flight. That aircraft is coming from Southwest Florida and before that Los Angeles. (Flighty)

Another + for Plan B is that it’s a Hub to Hub flight. And EWR (Newark) is an International airport, LaGuardia is not. They’ll open asap to get the international flights out.

And I thought I traveled with a lot of luggage! Turns out I’m a minimalist compared to Luciano Pavarotti!

While in Modena, I got the chance to tour Pavarotti’s former home with his wife, Nicoletta. It was such an intimate way to learn about a man whose operatic legacy is larger than life.

In honor of Black History Month, I’m highlighting some amazing people and places who work endlessly to preserve and share African-American stories with all of us… starting with the Historic First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Virginia.

The church goes all the way back to 1776 when both enslaved and free Blacks gathered in secret to worship. They’ve moved a few times but they’ve been at their current location since 1956.

I got to meet with congregants Connie Matthews Harshaw and Johnette Gordon-Weaver to talk about the church’s history as well as the massive archeological project to uncover both the foundations and gravesites of the First Baptist Meeting House and Burial Ground.

Connie is the president of the Let Freedom Ring Foundation, and Johnette is the first Black member of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Williamsburg chapter!

While there, don’t miss the chance to reflect and ring their 1886 Freedom Bell.
