In honor of Black History Month, I’m highlighting some amazing people and places who work endlessly to preserve and share African-American stories with all of us… starting with the Historic First Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Virginia.

The church goes all the way back to 1776 when both enslaved and free Blacks gathered in secret to worship. They’ve moved a few times but they’ve been at their current location since 1956.

I got to meet with congregants Connie Matthews Harshaw and Johnette Gordon-Weaver to talk about the church’s history as well as the massive archeological project to uncover both the foundations and gravesites of the First Baptist Meeting House and Burial Ground.

Connie is the president of the Let Freedom Ring Foundation, and Johnette is the first Black member of the Daughters of the American Revolution’s Williamsburg chapter!

While there, don’t miss the chance to reflect and ring their 1886 Freedom Bell.

When I first came to Bologna, Italy 20 years ago, it completely reshaped how I saw my own travels. As much as I enjoy what I call Europe’s A-side cities (aka the cities that get all the attention), I found I really loved its smaller B-side cities.

While A-side cities have designated hotspots geared towards visitors and a list of must-sees, B-side cities often feel like you’re stepping into the locals’ regular rhythms – seeing what they see everyday, eating at places they’d eat at.

And like with a record, both A and B-side cities are important to a trip!

- 2oz tequila blanco
- .5 oz lime juice
- grapefruit soda (squirt, jarritos, etc)
