Remembering 9/11
And our Flag was still there.
Like everyone, I went to bed on September 11, 2001 knowing there would be little sleep. That day, I was on a shoot at The Mohonk Mountain House in upstate New York. Mercifully, there were no TVs in the guestrooms. I could have easily watched the news through the night, alone in my hotel room trying to comprehend a tragedy. Even time has brought little acceptance and understanding.
I woke around 3am. Not because of my thoughts or the restless sleep that a glass of wine brings, but because of a persistently strange noise. The noise came from outside. I wondered what in the world it could be. I got up and walked to the door that led out to the small balcony and looked up, searching for the source.
There, whipping in the wind, with an insuppressible strength, moving in a fierce yet joyous declaration, was the American Flag. It filled me with pride and gave my broken heart the gift of the beginnings of peace.
Today, all our hearts are beating memorials to those we lost as well as their families who mourn from around the world.

Samantha I too have vivid memories of that day! The sight of the firemen placing the flag atop the smoldering ruins gave me hope that the spirit of freedom would never die!
I remember a glimmering little piece of happiness and fun flying in the wind post-9-11.
I remember Seattle having no jets flying, for a few days I think. It was strange because I was so accustomed to that sound from birth.
The television was nothing but depressing for months afterward, and (this may sound like shameless Sam promotion) I turned to the Travel Channel. I never watched that channel. There was Samantha Brown doing a Great Vacation Homes show. I don’t remember which one, but I was thinking what a breath of fresh air on t.v.
I started watching the travel channel just for the Samantha Brown travel and hotel shows. I always felt like it was quality t.v. I know there is a lot of business in the biz of course, but that woman sure is cute, and happy, and nerdy.
The Discovery network started up a travel channel/Samantha Brown forum exclusively for fans of Sam, reading my mind. Those forums don’t exist anymore, unfortunately, but there you could find that, if you liked this obscure Samantha Brown person, you would be waiting in a very long line of people like yourself. She was just as personable in the Discovery forums as she was on t.v.
It was nice to find in those depressing days of television that our Samantha was still there.
