What it’s like to be a beekeeper for a day

Confession: I’m afraid of bees.

How could something so small incite so much fear in a grown woman? Yes, I know they’re mostly harmless. And yes, I know they play a crucial role in our ecosystem. And yes, I know they make delicious honey.

And yet they give me the heebie-jeebies.

There are a lot of perks when it comes to hosting a travel show. You get to see so many cool places and try incredible things you wouldn’t normally in your day-to-day life. That said, you sometimes find yourself waaay outside your comfort zone, scared out of your mind and trying to keep your composure. There is a camera rolling after all!

One such experience? Working as a beekeeper for a day.

Thankfully, Ted Dennard, beekeeper and owner of Savannah Bee Company, gently guided me through the process. Even though he claimed it was unlikely we’d get stung, I still suited up in all the gear. I wasn’t taking any chances!

Like many new and scary experiences, this one ended up being rather delightful. I can’t believe I mustered the courage to hold dozens of bees in my hands! Who am I?! I also tasted honey straight from the hive. I must admit that reward made this whole beekeeping thing worth it.
