Must-see spots in Florence’s Piazza del Duomo
You can’t visit Florence without exploring the Piazza del Duomo.
You’d have no problem whatsoever spending a full day (or two) making your way through this beautiful square. It’s filled with notable works of art and architecture. The doors of the Baptistry showcase incredible works of art that historians believe to be the beginning of the Renaissance.
The main draw, of course, is the Duomo– aka Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Construction began in 1296, but wasn’t finished for over 170 yeas. The cathedral’s crown jewel has to be its dome– which, by the way, is not called the duomo. The word duomo refers to the entire church. They’re just words that happen to sound a lot alike!
Anyhow, if you’re able, I highly suggest climbing to the top of either the dome or tower. You’ll get incredible vistas of the city, not to mention burn off all that bread and pasta you surely devoured the previous night.

I love the Piazzale Michaelangelo and do t miss the views while I’m am in town.
The best food is at the Osteria Santa Spirito I. The piazza Santa Spirito! And the best gelato in all of Italy is at La Carriaia.
I never miss shopping at Perruzzi either!

We loved it there, Samantha! Such incredible early architecture and friendly people. We stood where your photo was taken and gazed in awe of the details in the structures around us! Such a lovely place.
I was in Florence last year with my husband. I loved the Duomo. To add to the magic of Florence and Italy we were lucky enough to be there when an opera Singer was performing Italy’s most famous Italian songs adding to the already wonderful atmosphere.
I absolutely love Florence,having been there twice. The Pitti Palace, The Uffizi Gallery, The Bargello, all the shops,the food (especially Aqua al2), there isn’t anything not to love!
I’m so excited to see this piece on Florence. I’ll be going there in about 40 days(but who’s counting)! I can’t wait to see all the beautiful architecture. Thanks for sharing!
The Bargello is the former city jail, but now is the city’s sculpture museum. It contains amazing sculpture by Michelangelo, Donatello and Verrocchio–especially his David. The top floor has two rooms full of glazed terra-cotta by Luca Della Robbia, including a beautiful Madonna and Child . This museum is small enough to be seen in a couple of hours; and it’s always much less crowded than the Uffizi Gallery! One of my favorite places.
Each year I attend Michelangelo institute of italian language and culture in Florence….a great way to connect w other travellers from around the world!
