Samantha dances with Garifuna women in Honduras

Dancing with the Garifuna remains one of my most incredible Central American travel experiences.

If you’re not familiar, the Garifuna are of West African, Central African, Island Carib, and Arawak descent. Since the late 1700s, the Garifuna people have called Central America home, mostly on the Caribbean coast of Honduras (about 40 villages!), as well as in parts of Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua.

I had the distinct pleasure of baking cassava bread with them in Honduras. Next, they took  me to the beach for some festive song and dance. It felt so exotic, and yet I felt so at home. Nothing quite like food, singing and dancing to bring everyone together.
