The best place to dine like a local in Tuscany

Tuscany is synonymous with incredible food.

From local olive oil to super-fresh produce, homemade pastas and local wine, much time, effort and care goes into the region’s culinary offerings. There are plenty of restaurants ready and willing to cater to tourists. That doesn’t necessarily mean they serve sub-par food… but sometimes it does.

The key to finding the best food in a new town? Eat where the locals eat. Often, that’s easier said than done– who do you ask? (The answer: cab drivers. Store clerks. Probably not the concierge at your hotel.)

In the case of Florence, I did the work for you. Visit Trattoria Cave di Maiano, located in Maiano, a village 8km north of Florence. Enjoy a lingering lunch featuring hefty portions of homemade everything, like pastas, rabbit and veal. Preparations are simple, but unbelievably tasty. When the weather permits, grab a seat on their lush patio overlooking Tuscany’s iconic rolling hills. Now this feels like Italy!

PS Here’s another one of my best Italian travel tips.

Tuscany is synonymous with incredible food. On my last trip, I visited one of the most charming restaurants that fulfilled my Italian culinary dreams.

  1. Osteria La Porta in Monticchiello. Monticchiello is south and east of Pienza. It is really an off the beaten path hill town but worth finding.
Osteria La Porta is right inside the city gate on the left. Great food and wonderful view of the Val d’Orcia. Make a reservation and ask for terrace seating. What a view in the late afternoon and evening.

  2. We stayed at a 5 room hotel called the Toscanini Residences. 15th Century Building recently remodeled in the San Spirito area of Florence across from the Pitti Palace and a short walk to Ponte Vechio. Our hosts Paulao and Andrew could not have been more gracious and attentive. Crisp fresh white linens every evening and wonderful air conditioning for our July visit.
Several of the best restaurants that cater primarily to locals are on that side of the river. Best news was that our room – one of their smallest, BTW, was less tha €100 per night.
