Best Beaches: Culebra, Puerto Rico
Culebra is a tiny nugget of paradise right off of Puerto Rico’s Northeast coast that just happens to have some of the most beautiful beaches in all of the Caribbean. In fact when I first saw it’s powder sand and cerulean blue waters it reminded me of the poster ready beaches found on the Greek Isles. And yet no passport is needed(as an American) and it’s about 3,000 miles closer.
However, if you do want dance your Shakira off, this island is not for you. Culebra is blissfully void of dance clubs, high end shopping and hip hotels. Although the smattering of restaurants and accommodations will keep you well taken care of for a few nights stay and day trips as well. This is a place to tune the world out.
Tip: Everything I said goes out the window during holidays celebrated in Puerto Rico (especially during Holy Week) where it becomes so overwhelmed by campers that it resembles Woodstock sans Jimmy and Janis. So make sure you check before you leave.
Hotel recommendation: Club Seabourne is a nice place to stay, great staff, clean refreshing rooms (let’s hear it for air conditioning!) and really good food.

There is no night life at all on Culebra that I found. If that is what you are looking for, take the cheap plane ride over and back to just enjoy the beaches and the views for a day trip. The ferry is cheaper, but takes about 4 hours to get over. When I went with two of my gal pals, we rented a Jeep for about $50 at the airport for the day so that we could explore the beaches I had discovered on my GPS. We got there at 7:30 am and enjoyed an empty island for a few hours before ferries began arriving. Flamenco Beach is gorgeous for sunrise, but it tends to get very busy during the day. They do serve food and drinks there and it is the only beach on the island with restroom and food facilities. We found Playa Zoni to be our favorite, it is accessible by golf cart or Jeep, a bit off the beaten path, but my Garmin knew where it was. We spent most of our day there lounging on the beach and enjoying the water and sights of the coral reef. The rest of the day was spent driving around the island in the Jeep including a venture to the highest point we could find with spectacular views.
